Catcher in the Rye by JD SalingerThe hero-narrator of THE CATCHER IN THE RYE is an ancient child of sixteen, a native New Yorker named Holden Caulfield. Through circumstances that tend to preclude adult, secondhand description, he leaves his prep school in Pennsylvania and goes underground in New York City for three days. The boy himself is at once too simple and too complex for us to make any final comment about him or his story. Perhaps the safest thing we can say about Holden is that he was born in the world not just strongly attracted to beauty but, almost, hopelessly impaled on it. There are many voices in this novel: children's voices, adult voices, underground voices-but Holden's voice is the most eloquent of all. Transcending his own vernacular, yet remaining marvelously faithful to it, he issues a perfectly articulated cry of mixed pain and pleasure. However, like most lovers and clowns and poets of the higher orders, he keeps most of the pain to, and for, himself. The pleasure he gives away, or sets aside, with all his heart. It is there for the reader who can handle it to keep.

For the Catcher in the Rye Essay
You will be looking for academic articles discussing the following (focus on one of them):
-The Five Stages of Grief
-Depression (causes and symptoms)
-Anxiety
-Bipolar disorder
-Impact of the loss of a family member
These may or may not apply to Holden Caulfield, but that is up to you to determine. If you have other ideas to explore, please feel free to do so, but you must support claims with evidence from academic sources. Remember to be sensitive in discussing this assignment, as the subject matter is sensitive to many.
Places to look:
-Questiaschool.com (log in with your school ID and password)
-scholar.google.com
-online database through RP Library website
You need to first decide what evidence you are using from the online resources. This can be direct quotes, or paraphrased - you will give the resource credit either way.
Once you find (AT MINIMUM) 3 pieces of evidence from your online sources, you need to grab a book and start looking back at Holden's experience. You will need to find at least 3 quotes from Holden's story to relate back to the evidence you found online.
Tie your online evidence to quotes that Holden says, remember - you're proving that Holden fits the diagnosis.
Here is an example:
A sign of situational depression in adolescents is a loss of interest in otherwise enjoyable activities (Tebbe). Holden exemplifies this symptom in nearly all situations he encounters, Holden finds a reason to dislike the event. Instead of watching an important football game with all of his friends at school, Holden is "standing way the hell up on Thomsen Hill" (Salinger 5). He points out that "the whole school except [him] was there" (Salinger 5). He could be enjoying the game with the rest of his school, but he is now isolating himself from his peers because he is so disinterested with all events going on around him.
